Laverne has spent Fishing Opener at Northland Lodge for over 50 years! If you live in the Northwoods, you know that March is not a month—it’s a mood swing. Over the last few weeks, we’ve watched the landscape shift from a sparkling white winter wonderland to the grey, misty "sugar snow" of early spring, only to wake up the next morning to a fresh six inches of powder. It is the season of mud boots and heavy flannels, of crackling wood stoves and the steady drip-drip-drip of icicles melting off the cabin eaves.
For us at Northland Lodge, these wild swings in weather aren't just a conversation starter at the local hardware store, they are the starting gun for a marathon. As the calendar turns toward April, our eyes aren't on the snowbanks; they are on the ice. We are counting down the days, the hours, and the degrees until Saturday, May 9th: The Minnesota Fishing Opener. "Opener" is more than just a date on the DNR calendar. In the Northland, it is a secular holiday. It is the official return to the water, the reunion of fishing buddies who haven’t seen one another since they pulled their ice houses off the lake a couple months earlier, and the moment the silence of winter is replaced by the purr of outboard motors. And at Northland Lodge, the next several weeks are dedicated to one single goal: making sure everything is perfect when you pull into the driveway for your first cast of the season. The Rhythm of the "Pre-Season" While our guests are currently at home spooling new line onto their reels and organizing tackle boxes, the scene at the Lodge is one of preparation. Preparing a historic resort for a summer season is a massive undertaking that requires a blend of carpentry, mechanical engineering, landscaping, and a whole lot of elbow grease. Prepping the Cabins Each of our cabins need a "wake-up call" after a long winter. This process starts with the basics: turning on the water systems, checking every pipe for the inevitable winter "surprises," and ensuring the heaters are humming. But it goes much deeper than utility checks. This is the time for the spring clean. We take pride in the "Northland Lodge Standard"—that feeling when you walk into your cabin for the first time and it smells like fresh pine and clean linens. Whether the weather outside is a late-April slush or a preview of June heat, the cabins must be ready to go! The Dock and Shoreline Battle The most physical part of the spring prep is undoubtedly the waterfront. The ice on our lakes is powerful; it heaves and pushes, often shifting the very landscape of the shoreline. Once the "ice-out" officially occurs—the day when the last white chunk finally disappears into the blue—the real work begins. The docks need to be leveled, boat lifts secured, and the "gas dock" needs to be ready for a summer of heavy traffic. We clear the winter debris from the shore, and prep the bait house. For an angler, the dock is the gateway to the weekend. It has to be sturdy, safe, and ready to handle the excitement of a 5:00 AM launch. The Fleet Maintenance A resort is only as good as its boats. Throughout March and April, our shop is a hive of activity. Every motor tested. We check the electronics, the livewells, and the bilge pumps. When you rent a boat from Northland Lodge on May 9th, we want you thinking about the walleyes, not the spark plugs. This "behind-the-scenes" work is what ensures your vacation remains a vacation-and not a series of technical hurdles. The Opener Obsession You might wonder why we put this much intensity into a single Saturday in May. To understand that, you have to understand the culture of the Northland. The Fishing Opener represents the end of the "long dark." It’s the first time we see the water since November. It’s the smell of two-stroke smoke in the crisp morning air. It’s that first, heart-stopping "thump" on a jig-and-minnow that tells you the walleyes are active. Opener on our lake is a special time. The water is cold and clear, the loons are back in force, and the fish are moving into the shallows. It’s a tactical game—finding the right rock pile or the perfect weed edge where the sun has warmed the water just enough to trigger a bite. At Northland Lodge, we don't just provide the cabin; we provide the home base for that hunt. We are the place where the stories are told at the end of the day, where the "one that got away" becomes a legend over a cold beer by the fire. The Return of the Wildlife When you book a stay at Northland Lodge, you aren't just a "reservation number." You are part of the seasonal cycle. You are the reason we spent twelve hours in the rain fixing a dock line. You are the reason we spent a week painting the trim on Cabin 4. Your excitement for the May 9th Opener is what fuels our "March Madness." Looking Toward Summer While the May 9th Opener is our immediate focus, we are also looking further down the calendar. A week at the Lodge in July is a vastly different experience than the Opener. It’s about the "Big Lake" swimming, the late-night shore dinners, and the heat of the afternoon sun on the deck. But the work we do now—in this messy, muddy, unpredictable March weather—is what builds the foundation for those July memories. We are planting the seeds for your summer. Every nail driven and every boat scrubbed is an investment in your family's vacation. What to Expect This Year We are anticipating a phenomenal fishing season. The late-season snows have provided excellent moisture for the watershed, which means healthy water levels for the spawn and plenty of cover for the young-of-the-year fish. Whether you are a "hardcore" walleye hunter aiming for the 5:30 AM launch on the 9th, or a family looking for a quiet getaway in the sun, Northland Lodge is ready to be your host. A Note on Gear: If you're coming up for the Opener, remember that "Northland Layers" are key. You might start the morning in a parka and end the afternoon in a t-shirt. Pack the wool socks, the waterproof boots, and of course, a fresh supply of 1/8 oz and 1/4 oz jigs. The walleyes will be waiting. Final Countdown As the sun sets over the partially-thawed lake this evening, the work at the Lodge continues. There are still nooks and crannies to be cleaned, motors to test, and a mountain of firewood to split. But the air feels different. There is a "snap" in the breeze that says summer is coming. We are ready. The cabins are calling. The lake is stirring. On May 9th, the gates will open, the first boats will hit the water, and another chapter of Northland Lodge history will begin. Will you be there to help us kick off the 2026 season? Has the "Northwoods itch" started to set in. We are now a couple of weeks past Groundhog Day, and whether the groundhog saw his shadow or not, the reality of life in the Northland remains the same: we’ve still got some winter to go, but the light is starting to change. The days are getting a fraction longer, the sun feels just a tiny bit warmer through the window, and our minds are officially drifting toward the water.
At Northland Lodge, we believe that the best way to bridge the gap between the last of the snow and the first of the loon calls is to put a date on the calendar. If you haven’t booked your summer vacation on Lake Winnie yet, now is the perfect time to give yourself—and your family—something to look forward to. The Power of Anticipation There is a mental shift that happens the moment you confirm a summer reservation. Suddenly, the sub-zero temperatures and the endless snow-shoveling don't feel quite so heavy. There’s this thing called the "anticipation effect"—the idea that the joy we get from planning and looking forward to a trip can be just as powerful as the trip itself. By booking your stay in February, you’re essentially buying yourself four months of daydreams. When we get that inevitable "surprise" March blizzard, you can simply close your eyes and picture the sun hitting the ripples on the lake. You can almost smell the pine needles and hear the screen door of your cabin swinging shut. Why Northland Lodge? Northland Lodge isn’t just a destination; it’s a tradition. We’ve seen generations of families grow up on our docks, and there’s a reason they keep coming back year after year. Lake Winnie is a name that commands respect in the fishing world. Whether you are an elite angler chasing that "Walleye Capital" reputation or a parent teaching a child to bait their first hook for a jumbo perch, our waters offer an experience you can’t find anywhere else. Booking early ensures that your boat slip is reserved and ready, giving you one less thing to worry about when you pull into the resort this summer. Lake Winnie offers 67,000 acres of adventure, but sometimes you just want a relaxing afternoon without the waves. Our heated swimming pool is a rare gem in the Northwoods. It’s the perfect spot for the kids to burn off energy while the adults lounge poolside with a book. Having both the lake and the pool means that no matter what the weather does, your vacation is never "rained out." A Cabin for Every Crew From cozy, romantic retreats to large, multi-family cabins that can house your entire 12-person reunion, our accommodations are designed for comfort. However, the secret is out—our most popular cabins and the "prime" weeks of June, July, and August tend to disappear by late February/early March. Booking now means you get your first choice of floor plans and the specific view of the lake that you love. Beyond the Docks: Exploring the Northland Planning early also gives you time to research all the hidden gems surrounding Deer River. Use these last few weeks of winter to map out a day trip to the Lost 40 to see the ancient pines, or plan a hike through Schoolcraft State Park. If the kids are along, you can look up the latest events at the Forest History Center or the Judy Garland Museum in nearby Grand Rapids. When you book in February, you aren't just reserving a room; you’re designing an itinerary. You have the luxury of time to find that perfect new lure, pick out a new life jacket, and coordinate with the extended family so everyone is on the same page. Trade the Shovel for a Fishing Pole Groundhog Day has come and gone, and while the "six more weeks of winter" might feel like a long stretch, we are officially on the downhill slide toward spring. Every day we get through is one day closer to the ice-out. Don't let the best weeks of the summer slip through your fingers while you wait for the weather to turn. Give your family the gift of a Northland Lodge summer. Let’s start counting down the days until the boat is in the water, the grill is hot, and the Northwoods air is filling your lungs. Ready to claim your spot on the lake? Give us a call today! We can’t wait to welcome you back to Lake Winnie! Can you hear it? That sweet, sweet sound? It’s the collective sigh of relief echoing from classrooms across the land – the school year is winding down! Pencils are being tossed (gently, we hope!), backpacks are getting lighter, and the promise of long, sunny days stretches out before us. And what better way to celebrate the end of homework battles and early morning rushes than with a good old-fashioned family vacation? Here at Northland Lodge, nestled in the heart of the beautiful Northland, we’re gearing up for a summer filled with laughter, adventure, and the kind of memory-making moments that stick with you long after the tan lines fade. We know the school year can be a whirlwind for everyone – kids included! Between classes, extracurriculars, and the siren call of screens, quality family time can sometimes feel like a distant dream. That’s why we believe a week (or even a long weekend!) away from the familiar walls of home is exactly what your crew needs to recharge, reconnect, and create some truly special memories.
Think about it: a week where the biggest decision isn’t what to watch on TV, but which part of the lake to explore first. A week where “burning off energy” means splashing in the waves or conquering a hiking trail, not just restless pacing indoors. A week where Mom and Dad can finally trade the endless cycle of chores and routines for a comfy chair overlooking the water, a good book in hand, and the happy sounds of their kids adventuring nearby. Sounds pretty good, right? One of the most wonderful things about a Northland Lodge getaway is the chance to unplug – literally and figuratively. We offer a refreshing escape from the constant pull of televisions, tablets, and video games. Here, the entertainment comes in the form of shimmering lake waters, the rustling leaves of towering pines, and the thrill of a fish tugging on the line. It’s an opportunity for kids to rediscover the simple joys – the satisfaction of casting a perfect fishing line, the wonder of spotting a deer in the woods, the exhilaration of skipping stones across the water. These are the kinds of experiences that build character, spark curiosity, and create lasting connections with the natural world. And for those little (and big!) bundles of energy, Northland Lodge is an absolute playground. Imagine the squeals of delight as they bounce across the waves on a tube, towed gently behind a boat - the thrill of carving through the water on water skis, the wind in their hair and a huge grin on their face. These aren’t just activities; they’re confidence boosters, memory makers, and fantastic ways to burn off all that pent-up energy from a year spent mostly indoors. But it’s not all about high-octane adventure. We understand that a true family vacation needs moments of relaxation too. That’s where our inviting (and wonderfully warm!) heated pool comes in. Whether it’s a refreshing dip after a day of hiking, a place for the little ones to splash and play safely, or a tranquil spot for Mom and Dad to unwind with a drink poolside, our heated pool offers a welcome oasis for everyone. A week at Northland Lodge isn’t just a break from home; it’s an investment in your family’s well-being and connection. It’s a chance to:

Within the vast Chippewa National Forest, just a short drive from Northland Lodge Resort and Campground, lies the Lost Forty - a pristine, 144-acre tract of old-growth forest. The Lost Forty stands as a testament to nature's resilience and the importance of preserving our natural heritage. This 144-acre tract of land, located northwest of Wirt, Minnesota, is one of the few remaining virgin forests in the state. Originally believed to be submerged beneath Coddington Lake due to a surveying error in 1882, the Lost Forty miraculously escaped the fate of being logged. Today, it offers a rare glimpse into the forests that once covered much of Minnesota. By staying with Northland Lodge Resort and Campground, you can have close access to this wonderful piece of historic land. As you wander through the Lost Forty's self-guided trail, you'll be surrounded by towering red and white pine trees, some of which are over 400 years old. These giants, reaching heights of 22 to 48 inches in diameter, create a canopy that filters sunlight and provides a cool, shaded forest floor for wildlife. The Lost Forty is a home for a variety of species, including bald eagles, hawks, woodpeckers, red squirrels, weasels, and many others. Take a walk through the trails and go on your own self-guided nature walk. The old-growth forest provides essential habitat for these creatures, ensuring their survival in a world that is increasingly developed.
From vibrant fall wildflowers to peaceful wetlands, the Chippewa National Forest offers a diverse range of hiking experiences. Whether you're a seasoned backpacker or a casual day hiker, you'll find trails that suit your interests and fitness level. Explore the forest's 160 miles of hiking trails and 373 miles of non-motorized trails, and find yourself in the beauty of nature. If you're seeking a peaceful retreat and a chance to connect with nature, the Lost Forty is a must-visit destination. So, take a drive to this hidden gem from your campsite or cabin at Northland Lodge and experience the tranquility of a truly ancient forest. Book Your Fall Getaway Experience the magic of fall at Northland Lodge. With our stunning scenery, outdoor activities, and cozy accommodations, you're sure to create lasting memories. A Perfect Place for Outdoor Enthusiasts One of the most captivating aspects of fall at Northland Lodge is the display of colors. Chippewa National forest begins to shed its greenery, replacing it with shades of gold, orange, and red, a beautiful backdrop for your stay. Not only is this colorful explosion on display above the horizon, Lake Winnie itself reflects the vibrant colors of the foliage, creating a picture perfect scene. Fall is a fantastic time to explore the great outdoors at Northland Lodge. Enjoy hiking or biking through the colorful trails, or rent a boat to cruise along the waters of Lake Winnie. Fishing enthusiasts will enjoy plenty of opportunities to angle the day's catch, as the cooler temperatures bring fish closer to the surface. Outside of the water, Autumn is an amazing time to spot and take-in the region’s wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, loons, and many of our other wild neighbors that call this region home. With the leaves changing and the food sources shifting, wildlife is more active and easier to spot. Please remember though: keep a safe distance, while these animals are majestic, they are also wild, and safety should always be top of mind. Activities and Adventure Waits for You The community around Northland Lodge offers a variety of fall events and activities in surrounding areas for guests of all ages. We have a variety of local festivals and events happening throughout the season for all interests! Celebrate the fall harvest with local farmers' markets and festivals. Not only are these a great way to spend an afternoon, but they also help support our local community, so they can continue to support us, and ultimately you! Fall is also prime time for local Arts and Crafts fairs, where you can find amazing souvenirs and handmade goods from our local artisans. In our opinion, some of the most interesting decor you can buy these days are at these fairs, rather than the mass produced decor you’d find online or at a big box store! If a festival or an arts fair isn’t your thing, and you want to get a more thrilling adventure, we’ve got PLENTY of hiking and biking trails to explore. If you want to move a little faster than your feet or bike will allow, bring your ATV and take an afternoon cruise! For you competitive types, fall is the perfect time (and last chance) to get out on the golf course. The experience is even enhanced with the autumn leaves! Pair that with a couple of your favorite beverages and I can’t think of a better way to spend a day up north! Cozy Retreats Finally, after a day of exploring, retreat to one of our cozy cabins and relax by the fire. Enjoy a cup of hot cider or a glass of wine while recapping the day, or watching the sunset. Our cabins offer a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, perfect for unwinding and enjoying the peace and quiet of the northwoods.
