The Northwoods Invitation: Get Back to What Matters

The beauty of a fall vacation at Northland Lodge is that the entertainment is provided by nature itself. The constant buzz of summer gives way to a quieter, more intimate experience. The forests that surround Lake Winnie and our resorts begin their colorful season in shades of red, orange, and gold.

  • Soak in the Fall Colors: There's no better way to appreciate this show than with a leisurely drive or a peaceful hike. The Chippewa National Forest, right in our backyard, has countless miles of trails and forest roads perfect for a day of exploring. As the leaves begin to turn, the light changes, creating a feeling on the paths that is unique to Northern Minnesota. It’s the ideal setting for a family walk to collect colorful leaves or for a couple to find a quiet spot with a thermos of coffee.
  • Wildlife in Motion: The cooler, quieter fall season also makes it prime time for wildlife viewing. With fewer people in the woods, animals become more active and are easier to spot. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, foxes, and a variety of birds. You might even catch a glimpse of bald eagles that call this area home, soaring over the lake before their own seasonal changes begin.
  • The Best of Water: While the swimming season may be winding down, the water is still very much a part of the fall experience. The calmer waters of Lake Winnie are perfect for a relaxing kayak or canoe ride. With little to no boat traffic, you can paddle along the shoreline, listen to the loons, and appreciate the fall colors from a whole new perspective. It’s a peaceful and meditative way to enjoy the great outdoors before the ice sets in.

Fishing: Fall's Premier Thrill

For many, fall fishing on Lake Winnie is the highlight of the entire year. It’s a time when the crowds have left, but the fish are just getting started. As the water temperatures drop, fish become more active and aggressive, feeding heavily to fatten up for the long winter. This translates into some of the most exciting and productive fishing of the season.
  • Walleye: The undisputed king of Lake Winnie, walleye fishing in the fall is legendary. They move from their deep summer haunts to shallower flats and along the shorelines, making them easier to target. A simple jig-and-minnow setup can be incredibly effective during this time.
  • Northern Pike & Muskie: For those who love a good fight, the cooler water energizes the northern pike and muskie populations. This is often the best time of year to land a trophy-sized muskie on Lake Winnie. With less boat traffic, you can fish your favorite spots without interruption.
  • Jumbo Perch: Fall is also a fantastic time to fill your bucket with jumbo perch. They school up and are often found in the same areas as walleye, making for a fun and productive day on the water.

Whether you’re a lifelong angler or just getting into the sport, the fall fishing on Lake Winnie is an unmissable experience. It’s the perfect blend of beautiful scenery, quiet solitude, and thrilling action on the water.
Your Perfect Stay: There's Something for EveryoneAt Northland Lodge, we understand that a memorable vacation is about more than just the activities; it's about the feeling of being at home. That's why our cabins are designed to be your cozy Northwoods retreat. Whether you’re coming with or without the kids, you’ll find a space that’s just right.

  • For the Anglers: All of our cabins offer quick lake access, so you can be out on the water at a moment’s notice. We have a fish cleaning house, and we are always happy to offer tips and advice on where to find the bite.
  • For Families: As the summer ends, a final trip is a great way to reconnect. Our cabins are comfortable, and the surrounding areas provide a safe and fun place for kids to play and explore.
  • For a Quiet Getaway: For couples or friends seeking a peaceful escape, the fall is a perfect time. Our quieter atmosphere allows for deep conversation, relaxation, and a chance to truly unwind.

We believe that every season at Northland Lodge offers something special, but there's a unique magic to the fall. It’s a time of breathtaking beauty, exciting fishing, and peaceful moments that remind you to slow down and appreciate the simple things. Don't let these final weeks of summer slip by without experiencing the best of the Northwoods.
