It’s no secret that we love our Lake Winnie, not only is it a hot destination for fishing enthusiasts but it’s also a perfect place for hikers and nature lovers who want to do some exploring! Surrounding the pristine waters of the lake are a variety of hiking trails that showcase the area's natural beauty and provide an opportunity to immerse oneself in the great outdoors. If you’re interested in a journey to discover the many miles of hiking trails around Lake Winnie, where scenic vistas, diverse wildlife, and serenity await. Read on!

The Cut Foot Sioux Trail offers a scenic and immersive hiking experience for land lovers. This 12-mile trail winds through the Chippewa National Forest and offers a mix of terrains, including forested areas, wetlands, and charming meadows. As you explore the trail, keep an eye out for wildlife such as white-tailed deer, black bears, and a variety of bird species. The trail also features interpretive signs that provide insights into the local flora, fauna, and Native American history for people who like a little history lesson along with their exercise!

For a truly unique hiking experience,  put the Lost 40 Trail on your must-do list! Named after a mapping error in the early 1900s that resulted in a stand of untouched old-growth forest being "lost," this trail takes you through an unspoiled forest ecosystem. As you wind your way through towering red and white pines, some over 300 years old, you'll be transported back to a simpler time, without all the tech and stress the modern world is offering. The trail is relatively flat and has a peaceful atmosphere, making it ideal for nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and photographers.

The Migizi Trail is a moderate, 8.2-mile loop that winds through the Chippewa National Forest, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness. As you hike along this trail, you'll be treated to forested areas, wetlands, and beaver ponds. The trail is dotted with benches and overlooks, allowing hikers to pause and absorb the beauty of their surroundings. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including bald eagles soaring above the treetops.

If you're a seasoned pro, and are  seeking a more challenging hiking adventure, the Suomi Hills Trail is an excellent choice. This 16-mile loop trail takes you through the rolling hills and dense forests of the Suomi Hills Recreation Area. As you traverse the trail, you’ll trek across multiple terrain types, and be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including glimpses of Lake Winnie. Elevation changes and rugged terrain make Suomi Hills a satisfying and invigorating hike for experienced outdoor enthusiasts.

For a hike that combines scenic beauty with historical significance, explore the Winnie Dam Trail. This 1.5-mile loop trail takes you along the eastern shore of Lake Winnibigoshish, offering amazing views of the lake (be sure to bring your camera) and the towering Winnie Dam. Interpretive signs along the trail provide information about the dam's construction, the lake's ecology, and the historical significance of the area. This family-friendly trail is ideal for a leisurely stroll, picnicking, or simply enjoying the serenity of the lake.

It goes without saying that the hiking trails around Lake Winnie offer a gateway to breathtaking natural landscapes, serene surroundings, and opportunities for exploration. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a nature enthusiast looking to reconnect with the great outdoors, these trails provide a diverse range of experiences. From the captivating forests of the Lost 40 Trail to the scenic vistas along the Winnie Dam Trail, each hike offers a unique adventure that allows you to connect with nature's wonders.
